Why Does PG&E Want To Give You Money?: During the late 1990’s the United States deregulated the energy industry. Locally, the result was that PG&E sold all energy producing assets and focused mainly on maintaining and supporting transmission infrastructure. The government added incentives to PG&E, (and all participating utilities) to create energy efficiency programs that would actually promote lower energy demands. Part of this program is to promote emerging renewable technologies that are qualified and proven. Both solar and wind electric energy are qualified and proven! PG&E is motivated to provide significant financial incentives for your firm to install a solar electric energy system because the majority of the energy will be produced coincidentally, during peak electrical demand moments of the year. Just when the utility needs your electricity production! This fact that solar production is coincident with peak usage allows the utility to defer upgrades to the utility grid. This is why the utility wants to provide your business with the opportunity of becoming your own renewable energy utility. How Does It Work: The utility provides a special, bi-directional electric meter with your finished solar installation. During the solar electric production times, your solar array will send valuable electricity back through the utility grid and literally spin the meter backwards. When the solar electricity is not available, eg. when it is night or raining, then your energy is provided from the grid, ensuring continuous availability. This is called net-metering, the key ingredient that makes having a solar electric energy array profitable. Rebate update: The rebate program is transitioning effective January 1, 2007to be more performance-based. For example, systems between 30 and 100kW are eligible for a one-time rebate of $2.50 per Watt of expected performance. For systems larger than 100kW, the rebate is based on the energy generated, and is $0.39 per kWh paid monthly for five years. Feel free to contact RER for additional information. |
